Work continues in
the effort to provide additional protection from
the threat of flooding in the Las Vegas Valley.
For this mission, Clark County Public Works
recently completed construction on the Flamingo
Wash from Maryland Parkway to Spencer Street
Phase II project.
The project
started construction on November 15, 2004 and
cost approximately $3.5 million. Most of these
funds came from the Clark County Flood Control
District with about $89,000 authorized by the
Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act. Like
other county flood control measures, this
undertaking is supported by a one-quarter of
one-percent sales tax. Meadow Valley, Inc., MWH,
R2H Engineering, Inc., Kleinfelder, Inc. and
Clark County partnered to design and construct
this section of the Flamingo Wash.
The wash features
concrete-lined channel improvements between
Maryland Parkway and Algonquin Drive. The work
also includes a storm drain collection system in
Algonquin Drive that will collect storm water
from Katie Avenue and from the Boulevard Mall
locale. This particular section of the wash will
eventually become part of the larger Flamingo
Arroyo Trail that will extend from the UNLV
campus to the Wetlands Park and Sunrise
Management Area on the eastern edge of the Las
Vegas Valley.
The project also
features a pedestrian bridge over the Flamingo
Wash channel. Like the channel improvements, it
offers functional benefits. "The new
pedestrian bridge provides a safe and shorter
route for the neighborhood and especially the
students of Ruby Thomas Elementary School and
Orr Middle School" said Commissioner Myrna
Williams who represents the area in which the
project sits.
