General Election Results Canvassed

County Commissioners will convene a special meeting Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. to receive a report from Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax about the conduct of the Nov. 2 general election. The board is also expected to approve the results of the election, an act required by state law.

Residents can watch the meeting live at 2 p.m. by logging on to the county’s web site at www.accessclarkcounty.com or by tuning-in to CCTV 4, the Clark County government access television station.

Turnout reached historic levels and the election was conducted without major glitches, Lomax is expected to tell the board. A record high of 545,315 citizens voted, or 80 percent of 684,313 registered voters. By comparison, 384,772 Clark County citizens voted in the 2000 general election.

The 271,465 who voted early set the stage for a successful election, Lomax said. Absentee ballots totaled 53,349.

“The Election Department did an outstanding job under very difficult circumstances,” County Manager Thom Reilly said. “We all owe the Election Department employees, the numerous other county employees who pitched in and our citizen volunteers a debt of gratitude for conducting what everyone seems to agree was a fair and smooth election.”

Under the watchful eye of hundreds of poll watchers, attorneys and others who scrutinized the election throughout the day, problems were minimal, expected and handled professionally by election officials and workers.
