Building roads is just one aspect of providing safe and efficient transportation systems.  High quality, routine maintenance is essential, efficient and cost effective to sustain streets in good condition.   Public Works contracts with outside firms for both routine and specialized pavement maintenance activities, in addition to work also completed by its own work forces.  These projects maximize the value of the County’s roadways by: extending useful life, remediating badly deteriorated roadway sections, and by bringing County roadways into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Over the past 6 years, more than $58 million in local gas tax monies have been directed toward this effort.

Three different types of maintenance treatments will be completed in various parts of unincorporated Clark County in 2005.

·      Slurry seal projects are mixtures of fine-graded sand and aggregates with quick setting asphalt emulsions.  These are typically used on pavements that are 5 to 15 years old to extend the life of the pavement by sealing out water and shielding the asphalt from oxidation due to ultraviolet rays.

·       Pulverize and pave projects grind up the existing asphalt on older, more deteriorated streets and recycle it as a high-quality base for a new layer of asphalt paving.

·       ADA compliance projects provides wheelchair sidewalk ramps at intersections or the replaces of non-conforming intersection wheelchair ramps not meeting applicable standards.

Wondering whether your street in unincorporated Clark County is on the list for this year? Just click on the links above to find out if your neighborhood is on it.  Residents that live in incorporated cities such as Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Mesquite and Boulder City will have to check with the public works agencies in those cities to find out about their roadway maintenance programs.
