Ceremony
Honors Woodbury with Beltway Renaming

Clark
County recently joined the Henderson Chamber
of Commerce to officially h
onor County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury in a
ceremony that celebrated the naming of the
Bruce Woodbury Beltway.
The Henderson Chamber of Commerce was
instrumental in developing local community
interest to rename the Las Vegas Beltway.
The
Chamber sought and received support from
U.S. Senator Harry Reid, U.S. Congressman
Jim Gibbons, U.S. Congressman Jon C. Porter,
Governor Kenny Guinn, Lieutenant Governor
Lorraine Hunt, Nevada State Senator Sandra
Tiffany, the Las Vegas City Council, the
cities of Henderson and North Las Vegas and
the Regional Transportation Commission of
Southern Nevada (RTC).
On
March 2, 2004, the Clark County Commission
approved a resolution, which stated that
Interstate 215 and Clark County 215 would
henceforth be known as the Bruce Woodbury
Beltway. But, celebrations and signage were
postponed until after the fall election
campaign season.
In
his roles as Clark County commissioner and
chairman of the RTC, Bruce Woodbury
exercised the foresight and leadership for
transportation in the fast-growing Las Vegas
Valley.
He was also instrumental in the
passage of key transportation ballot
initiatives in 1990 and 2002, as well as the
decision to accelerate the construction of
the initial facilities of the beltway by the
end of 2003 – at least 12 years sooner
than previously planned.
Commissioner
Woodbury, still somewhat uncomfortable with
the renaming, admits that the Chamber of
Commerce tried to convince him for a couple
years to agree to the renaming of the
roadway facility.
“This is a wonderful honor that I would like to share with
all of the others who have worked so hard to
improve our transportation system,” said
Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury.
According
to Clark County Public Works Director Marty
Manning, "Bruce Woodbury
Beltway" signs will be placed in
eight locations along the beltway during the
next year. During the ceremony,
Commissioner Woodbury was presented with a
smaller version of the sign.
In
addition to the Henderson Chamber of
Commerce and Clark County, other sponsors of
the ceremony were the city of Henderson,
CH2M Hill and the RTC.
The ceremony was held in City of
Henderson’s Acacia Park.
