Commission OK’s Traffic Safety Plan

The County Commission Tuesday took a big step forward in addressing traffic safety concerns by approving a $2.9 million plan to expedite construction of traffic signals and flashing beacons.

The plan, advocated by Commissioner Lynette Boggs McDonald, calls for spending $1.5 million more to install traffic signals at 14 intersections and $1.38 million more for flashing beacons to be placed atop stop signs at 39 intersections.

"It's the highest priority we, as local government, can provide to our citizens," Boggs McDonald said, framing the issue as one of public safety.

The plan requires setting aside $1.5 million in additional funding through the remainder of the fiscal year ending June 30 to expedite construction of traffic signals. More money will be set aside through the county's budgeting process for next fiscal year, which starts July 1.
