Work
continues in the effort to provide additional protection
from floodwaters in the Las Vegas Valley. In that
regard, Clark County Public Works will begin
construction on four projects before the end of 2007:
Duck Creek Channel/Eldorado Lane to Spencer Street; Duck
Creek Channel/Las Vegas Boulevard to Silverado Ranch
Boulevard; Fort Apache Road Storm Drain/F1 Channel North
to Hacienda Avenue; and the Lower Blue Diamond Detention
Basin Outfall Pipe.

The
projects’ features are designed to help manage the
flow of storm waters, serve as conveyances to move the
water to detention basins or otherwise disperse it and
mitigate the damage that floodwaters can cause. The
Clark County Regional Flood Control District will supply
funding for the construction.
-
Duck
Creek Channel/Eldorado to Spencer
A 60-foot wide channel with a box culvert (a
concrete structure which conveys stormwater)
will be constructed at Eldorado Lane. Also, Eldorado
will be raised over the channel to lessen water
collection on this roadway and provide “dry
access” for motorists. Past heavy rains have
resulted in flooding on Eldorado with motorists
forced to detour to other streets. Additionally, to
help alleviate street flooding in the Robindale/Spencer
area, a section of the Duck Creek Channel will be
reconstructed and a storm drain will be built along
Spencer.
-
Duck
Creek Channel from Las Vegas Blvd. to Silverado
Ranch Blvd.
Construction will include concrete channel
improvements such as the placement of reinforced
concrete box. A pedestrian bridge will be built over
a section of the channel located in Silverado Ranch
Park for pedestrian access to the park. This
particular project will complete the Clark County
Regional Flood Control District’s floodwater
conveyance system from I-15 to Lower Duck Creek
Detention Basin.
-
Fort
Apache Road Storm Drain/F1 Channel North to Hacienda
The
project consists of the placement of a storm drain
facility, which will include reinforced concrete box
culverts and reinforced pipe, within Fort Apache
Road. This facility is designed to minimize flooding
along the Southern Beltway in an area between
Tropicana Avenue and Russell Road. The work is part
of the Regional Flood Control District’s Master
Plan.
-
Lower
Blue Diamond Detention Basin Outfall Pipe
This
construction project in the southwestern section of
the Las Vegas Valley will include a concrete outlet
structure to control the discharge of storm water
leaving the basin. From the outlet, water will be
carried along approximately 2,154 feet of reinforced
pipe to the Moberly Channel outfall. A trash rack
will be installed to prevent large objects from
blocking the water flow.
“The
County’s flood control projects, including these four,
are vital for the management of stormwaters in the
effort to protect our community,” said Commissioner
Bruce Woodbury, representing District A, site of the
Duck Creek Channel and Lower Blue Diamond Detention
Basin Outfall projects.
