To
kick-off National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month,
University Medical Center (UMC) Lied Adult Ambulatory
Care Center staff is providing men 50 and older discount
screenings for prostate cancer located at 1524 Pinto
Lane, on Wednesday, September 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
UMC’s medical staff will provide preventative
screenings by performing two quick and easy tests; the
prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the
digital rectal exam (DRE). Appointments are
required and the cost is $10.
Prostate
cancer strikes one in six men according to national
Prostate Cancer Foundation. Men in high-risk
groups, such as African American or those who have a
family history of prostate cancer may choose to begin
screening at a younger age. When the disease is found
early, there are effective treatment options to choose
from.
Prostate
cancer is the most common cancer in American men. More
than 218,000 men in the United States will be
diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
Appointments
are required for a prostate cancer screening. Call the
UMC oncology program coordinator at 383-2713 to schedule
an appointment, for Spanish dial 2.
