Safe Route to School Program

With school back in session, parents or guardians and young students may wish to review the routes to the schools their children attend. The Clark County “Safe Route to School” program is a helpful tool for that purpose. The program was undertaken to develop a comprehensive, computerized traffic, pedestrian and bicycle safety plan for elementary and middle schools located within the County’s jurisdiction. The plan is designed to reduce the potential for accidents and other traffic-related conflicts with children going to and from school. Utilizing program information, parents or guardians and youngsters can select the most appropriate routes to the schools.

As part of the program, Clark County Public Works’ Traffic Management Division conducts an annual inventory of all school-related traffic control devices within a two-mile radius walking distance for the elementary schools and middle schools located in Clark County. The division uses the information to determine if replacement and/or additional traffic control devices are needed. After the survey is analyzed and traffic control devices are replaced and/or added, Traffic Management staff members create maps of each school area. The maps identify the location of all traffic control facilities and devices.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to carefully review the map related to their children’s school, choose a route, walk the route with their children, and instruct their youngsters on the appropriate conduct at intersections and traffic control devices such as traffic signals, stop signs and crosswalks.

Public Works has developed a partnership with the Clark County School District to distribute Safe Route to School information to the District’s students. For the 2007-2008 school year, Public Works produced almost 157,000 copies of the maps and approximately 104,000 safety brochures for approximately 77 elementary and 24 middle schools within the County’s jurisdiction.
