Submissions Requested for Day of the Dead Exhibit

Clark County Parks and Recreation is seeking artwork for a Day of the Dead exhibit at  Winchester Cultural Center from October 31 through November 30, 2007, to celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday, El Dia de los Muertos. Works must relate to the holiday, which celebrates the lives of past loved ones as well as life in the present. Artists will be grouped into two categories, teens and adults, and must be at least 13 to enter.

All media are welcome, but works must fit through a standard door frame. A $100 prize will be awarded for the piece judged Best of Show for each category. Each artist may submit up to three works. Actual works must be brought to Winchester Gallery on October 25 or 26 between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Artwork not juried into the show must be picked up on October 29 between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Artists are advised to learn Day of the Dead traditions, which honor the dead, but also confront death itself, often with a humorous attitude. Day of the Dead is not to be confused with Halloween.

Food and festivities will continue through the two-day celebration November 1 and 2. Festival activities include recited satirical poetry (calaveras) in both Spanish and English, workshops, children's activities, dance and music. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays & Sundays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Artists wishing to create ofrendas, or memorial altars, may call Irma Wynants at 455-7029. Ofrendas will be displayed outdoors. Prizes will be awarded for best ofrendas.

For festival information, call 455-7340. For exhibit information call 455-8239.
