County Commissioner Susan Brager, Fire Chief Steve
Smith, Community Development Manager Randy Brown for
Mountain’s Edge and others broke ground in October for a
new $5.1 million fire station. When completed in
mid-2008, the station will boost emergency capabilities
and improve response times in the Mountain’s Edge
master-planned community in the southwestern part of the
Las Vegas valley.
Fire Station No. 66 is being built as
part of a cooperative agreement with Focus Property
Group, the developers of Mountain’s Edge, which provided
the five acres of land and more than $3.4 million toward
equipping the 10,500-square-foot facility and design and
construction costs. Clark County will pick up the
remaining costs, including personnel.
Station 66 will represent a new
design compared to stations of the past. It will feature
a dormitory, kitchen, training room, workout room and a
room for cleaning medical equipment.
“This new fire station allows us to
meet the demands of growth while demonstrating a
commitment to public safety,” said Commissioner Susan
Brager, who represents the area. “Providing fire
protection is an essential public service. This new
station brings greater protection for our residents and
businesses and should result in lower insurance rates
for them.”
County Fire Chief Smith agreed: “The
opening of this station gives us a significant upgrade
in response capability in one of the fastest-growing
areas in Southern Nevada.” He added that the facility
will relieve pressure on other fire stations and improve
service throughout the western part of the Las Vegas
Valley.
