A
contingent of county and state officials visited
Laughlin from Las Vegas recently in response to a public
outcry over the lack of social services in the
community. Organizing the visit from the group of about
15 management and administrative staff was Assistant
Clark County Manager Darryl Martin. He said he's already
recommending several policy changes - with some already
in the works - to give residents some relief.
"Some of the things we're going to put in place
immediately -- I'm going to try to get some utility
assistance money down here quickly," said Martin. "I'm
also going to work on getting the Silver Rider program
some additional resources." Martin added that Silver
Rider was really picking up the slack for a number of
residents by offering senior transportation and many
other needed services for Laughlin.

"One
of the things we're going to do on a monthly basis is to
send our management teams down [from Las Vegas] to see
where things are at, what changes are being made and
what else needs to be done," he said.
Martin is also recommending the creation of a new post
for the community. He added it will be a one-of-a-kind
proposition for social services in Nevada.
"Something that's never been tried anywhere is the idea
of sharing a state and county staff worker," Martin
said. "The person could provide county social service
work, state elder abuse work and CPS work. It's never
been done before and that's why we're going to have to
look at this and see if we can do it -- but, I think we
can."
