Star Catchers Dance Program Invited to Perform in July

Winchester Cultural Center’s Star Catchers Dance team will head to the Magic Kingdom in Anaheim, Calif., in July to perform at Disney’s California Adventures. The team submitted a DVD audition in January. The invitation was announced during the program’s fifth anniversary recital on April 11.

The hip-hop/jazz dancers are set to participate in Disney Magic Music Days, an educational program for student dance teams as well as musical and choral groups. The group will leave for Southern California on July 13. The performance is set for July 14 with a workshop, led by a Disney director and/or choreographer, on July 15.

Star Catchers Dance is a product of the hip-hop dance program at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive in southeast Las Vegas. The program began in 1999 with a handful of students in one class taught by Tiffannie Bond. It developed into a dance team in 2002 for dancers ages 8 to 16 and has since grown to a popular program with about 40 students at beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels. Because of the growth, assistant Samantha Nicholes was brought on in September to assist Tiffannie with classes and choreography.

Throughout the last five years, the team has performed for Clark County, city of Las Vegas and other community events, including one of the last conventions held at the Stardust. Aside from public performances, the students put together material to fill three annual recitals.

The team is currently planning fund-raisers throughout the spring and beginning of the summer to ensure their dreams of performing at Disneyland come true. The trip will cost an estimated $7,000, which includes proper dance shoes, transportation, lodging and admission to the park and workshop.

Aside from physical activity, Star Catchers Dance provides a creative outlet and positive alternative activity for children of all skill levels. Students follow a strict code of conduct, which includes staying away from drugs and alcohol, achieving academic excellence and showing respect for themselves and others.

The hip-hop dance program meets at Winchester on Monday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., for beginning dancers; 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for intermediate dancers and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for more advanced dancers. Cost for the 12-week program is $60. The summer session begins June 4.

Those interested in Star Catchers Dance can call Winchester Center at 455-7340.
