April
was National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to
remind all adults and communities about ensuring the
well being of
Nevada
’s children throughout the year. Pinwheels
For Prevention sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse (PCA)
Nevada
a program of Area Health Education Center of Southern
Nevada (AHEC), held its statewide public awareness
campaign, designed to bring attention to child abuse and
neglect in communities throughout
Nevada
.
In
April, in communities throughout the state, colorful
children’s pinwheels were planted in front of
courthouses, and public and private agencies. Each
pinwheel represented a case of child abuse and neglect
reported to the public children service agencies in
Nevada
. In 2006, there were 10,148 investigated reports
of child abuse and neglect in
Clark
County
. Most residents are unaware of how widespread the
problems of child abuse and neglect are in their local
community.
April
2nd through April 6 th PCA of Nevada
had 8,000 pinwheels on display at the North Las Vegas
City Hall south side lawn to figuratively represent the
local cases of investigated child abuse and neglect.
This display was designed to raise awareness and show
the public in a very dramatic way that child abuse and
neglect happen in every community and encourage them to
focus on prevention as part of an overall plan to break
the cycle of abuse.
