National
Public Works Week is an annual recognition highlighting
the essential and everyday functions of public works
which contribute to the quality of our community life.
Public works can include: roadways, traffic control,
transit, water, sewer, flood control and other critical
services. During the weeklong event, tens of thousands
of engineers and other professionals are acknowledged
for their efforts in designing, building, maintaining
and managing these systems and components of the
infrastructure. The American Public Works Association
instituted the program as a public education campaign in
1960.
The
theme for this year’s National Public Works Week is
“Public Works: Moving Life Forward.” This theme is
an apt description of the functions of several agencies
including Clark County departments of Public Works,
Development Services, Real Property Management,
Aviation, Water Reclamation; Clark County Regional Flood
Control District; Regional Transportation Commission of
Southern Nevada; Las Vegas Valley Water District;
Southern Nevada Water Authority; and the public works
agencies in Southern Nevada’s incorporated cities.
Their work enables Clark County to continue thriving and
moving forward through the many challenges in our
community.
