Student
from Spring Valley Christian Academy Guessed Closest
Lilly
Rosser, second grader at Spring Valley Christian
Academy, was announced the winner of the 2007 Mojave Max
Emergence Contest today. She guessed one minute
from the actual time of Mojave Max’s Emergence.
Mojave
Max officially emerged on March 26 at 11:34 a.m.
Lilly Rosser guessed he would emerge at 11:33.
Lilly beat out more than 6,000 other students by
guessing closest to the actual time of Mojave Max’s
emergence.
Upon
being announced the winner, Lilly exclaimed, “This is
awesome, awesome, awesome.”
Lilly
and her classmates received Mojave Max Olympic-style
medals, and Mojave Max T-shirts before all joining in
and singing the “Mojave Max Song.” A giant
traveling trophy was also given to Spring Valley
Christian Academy to display for one year.
Lilly
Rosser will also receive an XBOX 360, a digital camera
and a pass to visit any national park for a year.
Lilly and her classmates will be treated to a field trip
to Mojave Max's habitat and a pizza party at the Red
Rock National Conservation Area on May 10. Lilly’s
teacher will receive a new personal computer.
“One
lucky child in my district really hit the jackpot,
beating out more than 6,000 other students and being
only one minute off from the actual emergence time,”
said Commissioner Susan Brager, who represents the area
where the school is located. “But this is more than a
contest. It’s an educational experience aimed at
improving students’ understanding of our desert
environment.”
Mojave
Max is a live desert tortoise residing at the Red Rock
Canyon National Conservation Area. Like other
Southern Nevada desert tortoises, he enters a burrow to
brumate, the reptilian form of hibernation, every winter
and emerges every spring. Students are
encouraged to study the behavior of Mojave Max, and
enter a prediction for his emergence every year.
The contest begins November 1 each year and ends when
Mojave Max emerges. More information is available
