World
Vibration Concert Highlights Taiko June 17 at Winchester
Center
Clark
County Parks and Recreation’s World Vibration concert
series continues with the percussive sounds of Japanese
drummers Las Vegas Kaminari Taiko, at 2 p.m. June 17 at
Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children and
seniors.
Las
Vegas Kaminari Taiko, sponsored by the Japanese American
Citizens League, was formed in 1993 and is the only
performing taiko group in Southern Nevada. Recently, the group has been featured in KLAS-TV,
Channel 8’s I-Team commercial.
Taiko
was used in ancient Japan more than 2,000 years ago. After the samurai class
gained power during the 12th Century, a new cultural
movement began to appear, and taiko had an important
role as the drumming style provided accompaniment. The
tradition and technique of taiko is inherited through
generations under the iemoto system, traditional
Japanese teaching of art by a master.
Japanese
immigrants brought taiko to the United State sin the early 20th Century. Taiko drumming at Bon
Festivals was established in Hawaii as early as 1910 and found its way to
San Francisco in the 1930s. After a hiatus, due to the events of World
War II, two pioneer groups ignited taiko once more in North America.
KUNV
91.5 FM radio announcer Kay Tuma hosts the World
Vibration concert series, which has entertained
audiences with various styles of multicultural music for
more than a year. The next concert on July 1 will be a
celebration of the second anniversary of the series,
which will bring many past performers from a variety of
cultures back to the Winchester stage.
