‘Slim’
Kidwell Center Serves Area Residents
An
open house was held on June
22 to dedicate the “Slim” Kidwell Community Center
in Cal-Nev-Ari, a hamlet of 400 located 70 miles south
of Las Vegas.
Commissioner
Bruce Woodbury, who represents the area, welcomed
guests. “This
is a long-awaited day for the residents of Cal-Nev-Ari,”
he said. “I am very pleased that the county has been
able to provide a gathering place where residents can
come together as a community. Thanks to the Kidwell
family for their donation of land, this facility finally
became a reality.”
The
$700,000 building is a modular structure totaling 3,000
square feet and includes a large multi-purpose room,
kitchen, office and restrooms. Programs will include
bingo, card games, movies, guest speakers, exercise
opportunities and special events. Room reservations are
also available.
Hours
of operation are Monday, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday,
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information contact Debbie Pinkerton at
297-1682.
Cal-Nev-Ari,
located on Highway U.S. 95 south of Searchlight, also
opened up a volunteer fire station in February, almost
four years after flames destroyed the previous station.
The
$1.6 million, 4,000-square-foot fire station replaces
one that burned down April 7, 2003, and features four
bays to accommodate four emergency vehicles: a fire
engine, a 2,000-gallon water tender, a rescue unit and a
quick-response, one-ton pickup. The steel building also
has two showers and restrooms, a kitchen area, meeting room, medical storage
and an office area. Upgraded electrical and water
service were also provided to the building. Site
improvements included new paving and a new septic
system.
About
15 volunteers, each armed with pagers and hand-held
radios, staff the facility, one of 13 volunteer fire
stations with between 250 to 325 volunteers spread out
across the county. Ace Kidwell became the town’s first
fire chief in 1978, when he persuaded the county to
provide a fire truck.
Cal-Nev-Ari,
founded 42 years ago, is a portmanteau of California, Nevada
and Arizona
and is located near where the three states meet in the
extreme southern part of Clark County.
