Two new members were sworn in as county commissioners Tuesday.

Susan Brager, a 43-year resident and three-term School Board member, and Chris Giunchigliani (pronounced “June-kill’-ee-on-ee”), a special education teacher and former state assemblywoman, were sworn in Tuesday at the start of the regular County Commission meeting.

Brager, a realtor with Prudential Americana Group Realtors, represents the fast-growing southwest portion of the county in District F, while Giunchigliani will be working on behalf of the citizens of the central portion of the county in District E, which includes part of the Las Vegas Strip north of Flamingo Boulevard .

Rory Reid also was sworn in following his November re-election and was selected by his colleagues on the board to serve for a second consecutive term as their chairman. Commissioner Chip Maxfield, whose District C includes much of the northwest part of the Las Vegas valley, was chosen as vice-chairman.

Brager said she would push the county to be more proactive in constructing roads to improve traffic flow and community safety while building infrastructure needed to support population growth.

“We need to make sure that we’re prepared to deal with the growth that we’ll see in the next 10 to 15 years and be more proactive,” Brager said. “We need to improve our roads and address community safety and health needs. We need to look at those very seriously.”

Giunchigliani, who served in the Nevada Assembly for 16 years, agreed. “We need to address crime, neighborhood concerns and better planning for growth,” she said. “I am excited to begin this new job. While it will be challenging, I see it also as an opportunity to work with others to bring about a new faith in government.”

Giunchigliani added that she will seek changes in ethics policies covering the solicitation of campaign contributions during one’s time in office, better planning for traffic and transportation needs, and community policing that brings our police and neighbors together to combat crime.

Commissioners also were named to various local boards. Brager was selected by her fellow commissioners to serve as a member of the Southern Nevada Health District board, the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, the Nevada Development Authority and the Family & Juvenile Justice Services Policy and Fiscal Affairs Board.

Commissioner Giunchigliani was selected by her colleagues to serve as chairman of the county’s redevelopment agency and as a member of the Southern Nevada Health District Board, the Metropolitan Police Fiscal Affairs Committee, the Debt Management Commission and the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition.

All commissioners also serve on the Las Vegas Valley Water District board, the Clark County Water Reclamation District board, the county’s Liquor and Gaming Licensing Board, the University Medical Center board and the Clark County Redevelopment Agency board.
