Merchandise
displaying the lovable and popular character Mojave Max
is now available to the public.
Every
year, the Mojave Max Education Program educates
thousands of children throughout
Clark
County
about the
Mojave Desert
and the biology of native species. T-shirts and
field bags have been developed to promote and support
this education program, and the products are available
at the visitor’s center gift shop at the Red Rock
Canyon National Conservation Area or online through www.redrockcanyonlv.org
using the shopping link. Proceeds from the sale of
these products will go toward the administration and
further development of the Mojave Max Education Program.
The
program is a collaborative effort among
Clark
County
, the
Clark
County
School District
, the Bureau of Land Management and the Red Rock Canyon
Interpretative Association. The education program
provides in-class Mojave Max education presentations,
teacher lesson plans, educational resources and Mojave
Max school assemblies. All of these projects
support environmental education, environmental awareness
and the Mojave Max Emergence Contest.
The
Mojave Max Emergence Contest kicks off November 1 of
every year and continues until the live Mojave Max,
residing at the Red Rock National Conservation Area
Visitor’s Center, first emerges from his burrow every
spring. At that time,
Clark
County
residents celebrate the unofficial beginning of spring.
Following Max’s emergence, the
Clark
County
student who guesses closest to the actual time of his
emergence is announced and rewarded with prizes for his
or her entire class.
