The
Vector Control Unit of Clark County Public Works is
operating a new, state-of-the art sprayer truck which
will enable the team to more effectively and efficiently
handle weed and pest control in our community.
The
custom-made vehicle is a heavy-duty, four-wheel drive
machine with computer controlled, injection sprayers
that can handle numerous land-based or aquatic weed and
pest control jobs. Many jobs can now be carried out over
the course of a day without the cleaning and reloading
of tanks. The rig’s sprayers are part of a flexible,
three-section boom (a long, metal arm) that can be
positioned to reach treatment sites. The boom can reach
some formerly difficult to access areas that in the past
the Vector Control Unit had to manually treat, a process
taking many hours. The truck comes equipped with a
computer system which the staff members program to
measure the treatment products and to apply them by
injecting and mixing the products with water in the
truck’s 1,000-gallon main tank. The computer system
automatically records the kind and amount of treatment
product, the treatment site, the date of application and
the vector control unit staff member.
The
team can electronically transfer all of this information
to their computers and share with other entities,
including the Regional Flood Control District of
Southern Nevada, which are involved in public
works-related functions.
“This
truck offers some great benefits---the Vector Control
Team can be even more productive,” said Les Henley,
Deputy Director, Clark County Public Works. Henley
continued, “During 2006, the team treated
approximately 405 acres. With the rig, we expect the
team will be able to treat approximately 450 acres
during 2007.”
