County Public Works has been awarded a federally funded
grant totaling over $50,000 by the Nevada Department of
Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, to analyze the
effect radar speed trailers have on speeding
along residential streets.
The
funds will be used to purchase two radar speed trailers
that will be used to inform drivers of their actual
speed and of the posted speed limits in various
residential areas over the two-year period. Once
the trailers are in place, speed data will be collected
over different time periods by traffic counter
instruments.
Public
Works Traffic Management technicians will analyze the
information to determine the effectiveness of the
radar speed trailers. Upon conclusion of the
program, Traffic Management will continue to
utilize the equipment along roadways throughout the
County.
Grant
monies will also be used to purchase and distribute
informational materials to promote safe driving habits.
“We’re truly grateful for this grant because we hope
that the speed trailers and the informational materials
will encourage motorists to obey the speed limit and
exercise safe driving habits,” said Denis Cederburg,
Director of Clark County Public Works.
The
study will aid efforts by the county to improve safe
driving conditions in the Las Vegas Valley.
Concerns about traffic safety prompted the county in
2005 to launch its "bad
driving" campaign.
