Several new flood control projects are wrapping up across Clark County bringing more protection to the community when rain storms hit. Last year, 17 new flood control projects were completed across the county, and another 16 are beginning construction this summer. In total, 75 detention basins and approximately 450 miles of channels and storm drains have now been completed in Clark County.

Regional Flood Control District General Manager Gale Fraser explained that the District has much more work to do. “While a lot has been accomplished since the District began in 1985, we still have an equal amount to build over the next 30 years,” Fraser said. “Flood safety awareness and avoiding flooded areas continues to be an important message we need to send to our residents and visitors.” Flash Flood Season is July through September, but floods have been known to occur in every month of the year in Clark County’s history.

When flooding takes place, never drive through flooded areas. Just a few inches of swiftly moving water can sweep a car or SUV off the road.

Another important topic is flood insurance. Anyone can purchase flood insurance, whether they live in a high risk flood zone or not. For those not located in a 100-year flood zone, the insurance cost is very affordable, ranging between $200 and $500 a year. Call 1-888-CALL-FLOOD for more information.

For more information about flood safety and construction progress, log onto the District’s website at www.regionalflood.org. Located under the Public Information tab are several fact sheets about various flood related topics.
