Department
of Aviation employees are often asked for tips on how to
avoid the hassles travelers commonly encounter at
airports during busy seasons.
This
summer, there’s no better travel tip than encouraging
friends and family to use McCarran’s off-airport
baggage check-in service, Airport SpeedCheck Advance.
Since
May 2006, approximately 8,900 visitors and residents
have taken advantage of McCarran’s innovative off-site
check-in program to bypass lines at the airport ticket
counters.
Here’s
how it works: travelers drop off their bags at any of
four locations between 12 to three hours prior to their
flight’s scheduled departure. Bags To Go employees
issue customers their boarding passes and transport
their luggage to McCarran for security screening. The
service costs $20 for up to three standard-sized bags.
Once
screening has been completed by the Transportation
Security Administration, the bags are delivered to the
airline to be loaded onto the appropriate aircraft.
Travelers won’t see – much less have to lug around
– their luggage until they’ve arrived at their final
destination.
Off-site
baggage check-in is currently available to customers
flying on Southwest and United Airlines. However,
McCarran and Bags To Go representatives are working
closely with additional carriers who are on track to
join the program by year’s end.
Airport
SpeedCheck Advance debuted at The Venetian, with
additional locations at the Las Vegas Convention Center,
Luxor
and McCarran Rent-A-Car Center.
Additional
off-site locations will soon be added, with airport
leaders hoping that up to 10 percent of all checked
baggage will eventually originate at off-site locations.
