Weekly was sworn in as Clark County’s newest commissioner for District D at the
Commission meeting March 6. Weekly replaces Yvonne
Atkinson Gates, who retired from the Commission after
more than 14 years on the county board.
“I’m
excited to take this next step in serving the
community,” said Weekly, who was on the Las Vegas City
Council for the past seven years. “I am humbled by the
governor’s confidence in me and look forward to
working with my new colleagues.”
Weekly
was appointed by the governor to fill the remainder of
Atkinson Gates’ term on the commission, which expires
in January 2009.
“Clark
County and District D face many challenges I look forward to
addressing,” Weekly said. “Increasing access to
affordable housing, fostering new job opportunities and
keeping our neighborhoods safe are all crucial for our
community and will continue to be priorities for me.
“While
there is much we have done, there is still much more to
do to improve the quality of life of all our
citizens.”
Weekly
is a native Nevadan who was born in Reno and moved to Las Vegas
when he was four. After graduating from Western High School
in 1982, Weekly attended Clark County Community College and then
Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he received a bachelor’s degree in
communication in 1987.
He
began working for the Las Vegas Neighborhood Services
Department in 1995 and then served as a city council
community liaison until taking a seat on the Las Vegas
City Council in January 2000.
County
Commission District D includes large sections of Las Vegas
and North Las Vegas, and is generally east of Rancho Drive, west
of Lamb Boulevard, north of Sahara Avenue and south of Craig Road. Weekly was sworn in by District Court Judge Tim
Williams.
