Las Vegas
Boulevard Turf Replacement Project Completed

Clark County Public Works reports
an early completion on the conversion of approximately
80,000 square feet of natural grass to synthetic turf in
the Las Vegas Strip median islands. The replaced turf
stretches from Russell Road to Flamingo Road and cost
$982,871. Resort Corridor Room Tax revenues funded the
replacement of grass with artificial turf. The ongoing
maintenance costs of the medians will continue to be
paid by Strip property owners through a Special
Improvement District.
Clark County Public Works initiated a pilot program
to test the artificial material on one Strip median in
2003. The Department monitored the product for
durability and aesthetics and sought comments from Strip
properties and the public. It was concluded that the
synthetic turf was durable and attractive to both the
public and stakeholders. It is estimated that the
replacement will annually save over $200,000 in water
and maintenance costs and pay for itself in four to five
years. The expected life of the product is estimated at
between ten to twenty years. Additionally, the County
expects about $80,000 from the Southern Nevada Water
Authority turf replacement rebate program, which
provides one dollar per square foot.

"The use of synthetic turf along the Las Vegas
Boulevard is highly beneficial to the community. The
medians will look beautiful throughout the year for less
cost," said Commissioner Rory Reid. Reid represents
County Commission District G, where the turf placement
took place. Commissioner Myrna Williams added, "The
expected conservation of water is impressive ---
approximately five million gallons of water will be
saved each year by this conversion." Williams
serves as the President of the Las Vegas Valley Water
District Board of Directors.
Par 3 Landscape & Maintenance and NuTurf Inc.
performed the work on the turf replacement contract.
