600 Southern Nevada residents recently responded to questions about key community issues. The survey was conducted as part of Clark County ’s community indicators monitoring program, which tracks a variety of social, economic, public safety and environmental issues, including the Yucca Mountain Project.

Survey respondents overwhelmingly oppose the Yucca Mountain Project, with 71.4 percent indicating that given the opportunity to vote on the matter, they would vote against it.

Two-thirds of the respondents indicated a belief that, if built, Yucca Mountain would have a negative impact on their quality of life. When asked what single change would most improve the quality of life in Southern Nevada, one out of every nine respondents said “stop Yucca Mountain,” making it the fifth most important quality of life issue of those responding to this survey, after reducing traffic congestion, lowering crime rates, improving K-12 education and slowing growth.

Approximately 83 percent indicated that having a high-level nuclear waste transportation route near residential areas would have a negative impact on property values.
