Deadline
for Entries is June 30, Commission to Pick Winner
Residents of
Clark County
are invited to propose a name for a new female tortoise
that will reside at the Clark
County Government
Center.
The winner will receive a gift basket and be publicly
recognized when a new habitat, for which county
commissioners broke ground in May, is completed later
this summer.
Commissioners will select the winning name based upon
its suitability for a female desert tortoise.
Entrants
should submit their name, phone number and tortoise name
suggestion to the Clark County Department of Air Quality
and Environmental Management front desk, located at 500 S. Grand Central Pkwy., 1st Floor,
Las Vegas,
Nevada
89106. Entries may be mailed or delivered in person.
The new desert tortoise habitat will provide an area for
people to view native wildlife in the heart of the
Las Vegas
Valley. Many people are not able to visit the wilderness
areas of Southern Nevada, and having a nearby habitat
will allow them to view native wildlife up close and
learn more about the Mojave Desert
environment.
Just as “Mojave Max,” the famous
Clark
County
tortoise, was named through a community contest in 1995,
this tortoise will also receive its name from someone in
the community.
All residents of Clark
County
are eligible to participate. Entries must be
received by June 30. A link to information about the
contest is available on the home page of the county
website at
www.accessclarkcounty.com.
