The Clark County Safe Route to School Program provides a comprehensive, computerized traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle plan for elementary and middle schools under the jurisdiction of unincorporated Clark County. The program involves conducting an annual inventory of school-related traffic control devices within a two-mile radius walking distance for approximately 77 elementary schools and 24 middle schools. The data from the inventory is then converted to a Geographic Information System (GIS) ArcInfo geodatabase, from which maps for each school walking zone are generated spatially. The data for more than 15,000 school-related traffic control devices is checked, and corrections/additions are made. The maps are produced so that the parent/guardian and student can determine the safest route to the school that the child attends.
In our ongoing conservation efforts, this year we distributed all of the maps to the schools in electronic format so that each school may print only what is needed. Clark County Public Works also makes the maps available for download from our website in Adobe PDF format. Start with the "School Locator" map, zoom in on the school and click the icon for a direct link to the Safe Route to School map for that location.
