County Emergency Operations Center to Support Multiple Agencies Working New Year’s Eve
Clark County’s Emergency Operations Center will open on standby activation
at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, to provide support for multiple agencies monitoring the events of New Year’s Eve.
Clark County’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security manages the Emergency Operations Center from the first floor of the county Government Center. The center serves as a hub for providing support and coordination in Southern Nevada among multiple government and community agencies in emergencies. The county routinely activates the EOC on New Year’s Eve to assist the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department “Metro” with resource management and other activities in case any incidents occur.
More than 300,000 visitors are expected in the Las Vegas Valley over the New Year’s holiday. Metro’s role as the lead agency is to enhance public safety and security. Most of the valley’s entertainment activities, including fireworks at midnight if weather permits, will take place on the Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is located in unincorporated Clark County. Other festivities will occur downtown on Fremont Street, which falls within the jurisdiction of the city of Las Vegas.
“We are one of the most popular destinations in the world for celebrating the New Year, and public safety is always an important part of our community’s preparations,” said Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid. “The activation of our Emergency Operations Center serves as an extra preparedness measure to ensure a safe holiday.”
In addition to Metro, several agencies will have representatives staffing the Emergency Operations Center on New Year’s Eve. Agencies include Clark County Public Works, Clark County Fire, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Nevada Department of Transportation.
