The Clark County Government Center outdoor Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, will offer cool music to soothe hot summer nights in June with internationally recognized jazz and reggae artists along with local acts and art.
June 1 will kick off the month of events with First Friday featuring the art of Kevin Bays with an indoor
reception at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. in the setting sun, Urban Renewal, a free-form jazz ensemble, will take the amphitheater stage. The group is made up of local seasoned musicians who
create a spontaneous mix of jazz and hip-hop. The reception and concert are free to the public.
Jazz vocalist Jimmy Scott will continue the 13 th Annual Jazz in the Park concert series at the
amphitheater on June 2. Born in 1925 with a physical
condition that kept him from maturing fully, Scott has used his trademark falsetto voice to create seven decades of music. Only in the last 20 years has Scott begun to gain the notoriety he deserves. Lou Reed and the late Ray Charles counted themselves as fans. Admission to the Jazz in the Park concert series is free.
Internationally known jazz guitarist Bill Frisell will wrap up the Jazz in the Park series June 9 with a show full of his often-imitated sound, which resembles the swelling and breathing of a wind instrument. Over the years, he has performed as the house guitarist for ECM Records, collaborated with musicians of many genres and has released four CDs since 2000.
Seating for the Jazz in the Park concert series featuring Scott and Frisell will begin at 7 p.m. Picnic baskets, blankets and low-back chairs are welcomed. Although admission is free, food vendors also will be available on site.
On June 16, the sounds of the islands will invade the dry desert for the Sixth Annual Reggae
in the Desert festival. Legendary national acts include The Wailers, Third World, Don Carlos and The Itals as well as local band ForTwenty Daze. Guest appearances by Ras Indio and DJ Rhamma also are scheduled throughout the day. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 the day of the show. A ticket and T-shirt package also is available in advance for $28. Tickets can be purchased online at www.reggaeinthedesert.com.
Blankets for lawn seating and personal bottles of water are permitted for Reggae in the Desert. Vendors in the Caribbean Islands Vendor Village will have Reggae-style items, exhibits, food and beverages for sale. There will be no re-entry.
