Winchester Launches New Classes
Youth Choir, Oil Painting and Comics Drawing Begin Sept. 15

Winchester Cultural Center will launch three new classes with the start of the fall session Sept. 15. The Winchester Youth Choir, Oil Painting and Comics Drawing classes add to an already diverse class schedule at the center located at 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

The Winchester Youth Choir, taught by Jessica Kincaid, welcomes singers of all skill levels who want to learn two- and three-part harmony as well as the basics of sight singing and rhythm. Singers ages 8 to 18 also will learn how to properly care for their voices through warm-ups, posture and breathing techniques in a fun, encouraging environment. Members will perform at a concert at the end of the session. This 12-week program will begin Sept. 16 with classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $60.

Artist Juan D. Varela will teach two classes for budding artists of very different types. Oil Painting is for continuing and beginning painters to exchange ideas and learn from each other. Students must bring their own paint tubes, canvas and brushes. The class will meet from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 15. The cost for the six-week session is $37.

Comics Drawing, also taught by Varela, will focus on how to design fictional characters including their movements and positions. Participants also will learn exercises, which follow different comic styles, including Manga, which has gained popularity among young people. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday. The cost for the six-week session is $53.

Varela has been illustrating children’s books for 10 years, and he was an animator assistant for Hanna-Barbera Productions. He also has painted professionally in Las Vegas since 1986 and has completed multiple murals in town. He also currently teaches for the Casa de La Cultura Hispanoamericana. Kincaid is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno and has performed with the Reno Philharmonic and the Reno Chamber Orchestra.

Those interested in the Winchester Youth Choir, Oil Painting or Comics Drawing classes can call the Winchester Cultural Center at 455-7340. Registrations also can be accepted online at www.accessclarkcounty.com/parks.
