Artists Called to Submit Work for Exhibit

Winchester Gallery Seeking Submissions for Day of the Dead

Clark County Parks and Recreation is seeking artwork for the Day of the Dead exhibit to be held Oct. 29 through Nov. 21 at the Winchester Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive to celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday, El Dia de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead.” Works must relate to the holiday, which celebrates the lives of loved ones who have died. Artists must be at least 14 years old to enter. Actual works must be brought to Winchester Gallery from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 25 and 26. Artwork not juried into the show must be picked up between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Oct. 27-29.

All media are welcome, but works must fit through a standard doorframe and should be ready to hang or exhibit. A $100 prize will be awarded for the piece judged Best of Show. Each artist may submit up to three works.

Artists are advised to learn Day of the Dead traditions, which honor the dead, but also confront death, often with a humorous attitude. Day of the Dead is not to be confused with Halloween.

This year, for the first time, the County’s Day of the Dead Celebration will not be held at Winchester Park, but at the much larger Sunset Park at Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue. Food and festivities will continue through the two-day celebration from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and 2. Festival activities include recited satirical poetry (calaveras) in Spanish and English, workshops, children's activities, dance and music.

The exhibit will remain at the Winchester Gallery, which is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Artists who wish to create ofrendas, or memorial altars, may call Irma Wynants at 455-7029. Ofrendas will be displayed outdoors during the event. Prizes will be awarded for best ofrendas.

Those interested in additional information can call 455-7340. For exhibit information, call 455-7030.
