June 2009

Greetings!

LITIGATION COMES TO CONCLUSION
On May 8, 2009, the federal court dismissed the lawsuit against the shooting park. The details of the judgment and court findings are posted on our web page at

http://www.accessclarkcounty.com/depts/parks/locations/Documents/sp-courts-order-5-13-09.pdf

This case has been in process for many months and has been the subject of several newspaper, TV and radio stories. Due to this publicity, many residents of the greater Las Vegas Valley have heard about the new shooting park and we are receiving a great deal of requests for more information, especially inquiries about our services and opening dates.

Now that this litigation is behind us, we will be moving forwards in developing our operational documents and preparing for our grand opening.

DEDICATION
Our Dedication Ceremony will be held on site on August 25, 2009 at 10 am. Please check our web page in the next few weeks for further details. We are looking forward to beginning shooting sometime in early September depending on construction progress. Opening dates will be posted on the web page and announced in this eBULLETin.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
Work is continuing on the grounds. All of the paving is completed. The bridge over the Las Vegas Wash is having the final walls installed. All sidewalks are poured, all of the canopies are in place and 95% of the backstops are completed. The civil portion is estimated at 90% completion. This includes the extensive flood control structures, water delivery systems and all on site utilities. Please see our web page for construction photos.

The block work for the four buildings is almost completed. Work will be completed soon on all the roof structures. Dry wall has started in two buildings. The two metal buildings will begin construction within the next two weeks. Landscaping will begin soon as well

We are developing the procedure manuals necessary to operate the shooting park safely, and are currently purchasing all the materials necessary for its operation such as targets, clay birds, picnic tables, scorers stations, vehicles, etc.

OPERATIONS
The Clark County Board of County Commission has approved our rules, regulations and fees. They will be posted on our web page within the next month. We are making the transition from planning-construction to operations. We are accepting USER GROUP APPLICATIONS and beginning to schedule the various ranges for operation. If you are interested in starting a User Group please contact me via email or phone and I’ll send you the application package. These will be available on the web shortly as well. Registered User Groups are eligible to schedule the specialty ranges for their group use.

OUTREACH
In January 2009, we presented our newly revamped Trade Show Training Course at the Aliante Library in North Las Vegas. Eight volunteers attended this training. In February we completed our second session with combined training programs of Cornerstone and Trade Show that took place on Saturday February 21st. This training class was team taught with personnel from the Clark County Parks & Recreation Department Volunteer Program with lectures from the Neighborhood Justice Center and Park Police. The training class consisted of 57 volunteers with interests in the Clark County Parks & Recreations Department and the Clark County Shooting Park. Presently we have over 100 trained volunteers assisting the Shooting Park in outreach activities.

In the near future we will be training volunteer LINE SAFETY OFFICERS to help us with daily shooting operations. If you are interested in helping us with public shooting and being involved with our daily range operations, this is the program for you!

We are also looking for qualified people to join our HOST PROGRAM. The shooting park has 30 full service RV sites that are available for resident hosts to assist us with on site operations and maintenance tasks.

Volunteers for our Trade Show, Line Safety Officer, or Host programs may apply at the following site: Please be sure to indicate which program you are interested in. Once your application is completed, our staff will contact you.

WEB PAGE
We would like to call your attention to our web page at Shooting Park where we have posted a great deal of information including future employment, volunteer opportunities and a new feature as we have added a “scrap book” of construction photos. So please visit our site. We are also working on updating this site to become more “operational” with postings of our fees, rules, programs and other items for an operational shooting park.

PERSONNEL
We are pleased to announce that Iris Kikuchi has been promoted to fill the vacant Administration Supervisor position at the shooting park, we are looking forward to working with Iris and she has extensive customer service background. Kristen Acevedo was brought on staff to assist with all of our purchasing and Kristen Stetzenbach, our Outreach Specialist is now Kristen Siquian and will be returning from her honeymoon the end of June. Congratulations Kristen!

We are moving forward with the new positions for the opening of the shooting park. Due to cost containment issues with the current economy, these positions will be primarily be filled by existing county personnel.

Thank you for your interest and we will keep you posted on our progress. Please feel free to contact us through the web page and email if you have any questions or comments.

Until next time,
Don Turner, Manager
Clark County Shooting Park
