Friday, October 17, 2008

Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive; 455-7340
6 p.m.
Admission: $15 or $10 for children and seniors

Jazz singer and guitarist Mary Ellen Spann and her quartet will perform at Winchester Cultural Center at 7 pm Friday, October 17 in a Starlight and Strings benefit for the Friends of Winchester Park. The concert is co-sponsored by the Guitar Society of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Jazz Society. The Friends of Winchester Park is a neighborhood group that works to support the park and Winchester Cultural Center.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with live classical guitar music, hors d'oeuvres and wine served under a canopy of trees at a reception in the garden created by the Friends. A Waterstone jazz guitar will be raffled off, and a silent auction will begin and continue through the concert and intermission with bidding on such items as a concert at the bidder's home by a guitar ensemble, a three-course meal prepared in the bidder?s home by a professional chef, a house call by a tree surgeon to the bidder?s home to give advice on plants and landscaping, a large framed woodcut by artist Maria Arango, tickets for two to Bette Midler's show at Caesars Palace and tickets for two to Phantom at The Venetian, all for the benefit of the Friends.

At intermission coffee and dessert will be served in the garden under starry lights as the silent auction continues.

Tickets are $15 or $10 for children and seniors.

Mary Ellen Spann has released three CDs, including Red Robin and Heart Soar. She is among the Top 500 Jazz Vocalists of All Time in the book of that title by prominent jazz critic Scott Yanow.
