For the third year, the Winchester Star Catchers Dance Program will host its version of the popular summer Fox reality show “So You Think You Can Dance?” during the winter recital beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Winchester Cultural Center Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. During the show, members of the dance team will compete for the judges’ affections and the audience’s votes in various dance genres as well as perform in original group choreography. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.
In October, students in the advanced and performing team classes chose their dance genre and partners out of a hat. Broadway, jazz and contemporary styles are just a few of the genres aimed at pulling the dancers out of their comfort zones and introducing them to different dance forms. Dancers researched the style of dance as well as any costume significance in preparation for the competition.
Guest judges will provide their professional dance input while the audience is encouraged to cheer and vote for their favorites. Students in the beginning and intermediate classes also will compete with their own hip-hop choreography.
Other holiday performances in the dancers’ calendar include two performances at the Galleria at Sunset mall. All classes will perform at 9 a.m. Dec. 14 with the advanced class and performing team at 4 and 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 22. Both performances will take place in the mall’s lower level in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods.
A new session of classes begins on Jan. 5. Hip-hop dancers attend one-hour classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. for beginners, 5:30 p.m. for intermediate dancers and 6:30 p.m. for advanced dancers. The team’s contemporary class meets from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
The Winchester Star Catchers officially began at Winchester Cultural Center in 2002 when dancers participating in hip-hop classes decided they wanted to perform. In 2007, the dancers celebrated their fifth anniversary with a performance at Disney’s California Adventures in Southern California.
