For the fourth year, the Winchester Star Catchers Dance Program will host its version of the popular Fox reality show “So You Believe You Can Dance?” during the winter recital beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Winchester Cultural Center Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. During the show, members of the dance team will compete for judges’ accolades and the audience’s votes in various dance genres and perform original group choreography. Tickets are $5 for general admission.
In October, advanced students pulled their dance genre and partners out of a hat. Broadway, jazz, modern and interpretive styles are just a few of the genres aimed at taking dancers out of their comfort zones and introducing them to different dance forms. Younger dancers also had the opportunity to participate by providing original hip-hop choreography in the intermediate category. All dancers researched their style of dance as well as any costume significance in preparation for the competition.
During the show, guest judges will provide their professional dance advice to students while the audience is encouraged to bring signs, cheer and vote for their favorites. Those with the most votes will be announced at the end of the show.
A new session of beginning, intermediate and advanced hip-hop classes begin Jan. 6 with the beginning and intermediate contemporary class on Jan. 9. Beginners and intermediate dancers meet at 5:30 p.m. with advanced dancers at 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesdays. Beginning and intermediate contemporary dancers meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Cost is $60 per class. The Winchester Star Catchers formed at Winchester Cultural Center in 2002 when dancers participating in hip-hop classes decided they wanted to perform. In 2007, the dancers celebrated their fifth anniversary with a performance at Disney’s California Adventures in Southern California. To broaden their skills, students requested the addition of a contemporary class to the schedule, and they received it in 2007. Throughout the year, the Winchester Star Catchers can be found performing around the Las Vegas Valley at numerous community events.
