Mariano Gonzalez , master Paraguayan harpist, appears in a World Vibration concert 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 5 at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 South McLeod Drive. Tickets are $10 general admission and $7 for seniors and students.

Gonzalez, who lives in Las Vegas, has revolutionized the Paraguayan harp and uses it to play not only native Paraguayan music, but American jazz as well. He is celebrated in Japan and Europe and appeared at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. In Las Vegas he has performed with the Bob Rosario Jazz Ensemble. He last performed in Winchester Theater in 2007.

Gonzalez was raised as a cowboy in Buena Vista, Paraguay in a family of harpists; his grandfather was also a luthier, a harp maker. Gonzalez began playing at the age of 5. He began touring the world, presenting the music of Paraguay in 1973.

As a harp maker himself, Gonzalez redesigned the Paraguayan harp to allow instant chromatic adjustments, which permits him to play jazz and other contemporary music.

His 1999 performance at the royal wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones in London resulted in instant popularity across Europe. He spent 2000 through 2002 in Japan performing on radio, television, and the concert stage. In April 2002 on the Millennium Stage in the Kennedy Center, a concert audience of more than 2,000 awarded him three standing ovations. Since then he has continued to perform worldwide.
