September 2 through October 24
Roadmap to Withdrawal by Sean Russell

Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive; 455-7030
Artist reception September 12, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Artist Sean Russell brings a fresh look to exit strategies during his exhibit “Roadmap to Withdrawal,” which opens Sept. 2 at the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. An artist reception will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the gallery. The exhibit will continue at the gallery through Oct. 24.

Work appearing in Russell’s new exhibit looks at exit strategies in life, including historical and news events as he relates his work to the idea of either mentally or physically leaving Las Vegas. He presents new paintings on stretched canvases and free-hanging banners. The process-based paintings show Russell’s bold marks and dark palette.

Ideas on leaving Las Vegas, historical events and current news, alongside imagery associated with war, may be personal to Russell but are also timely.

Russell earned his master’s of fine art degree in painting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2005. He holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He received the Painters and Sculptors Grant from the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation in 2005, and he is one of eight artists selected to participate in Stop & Glow, a public art project for the Southern Nevada Transportation Commission set for completion in 2009. Russell also is an instructor at UNLV and the College of Southern Nevada.

The exhibit is sponsored by Clark County Parks and Recreation with partial funding from the Nevada Arts Council.

The Winchester Cultural Center Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Those interested can call the center at 455-7340
