Winchester Hosts New Classes for Spring
Registration Currently Open for Classes Beginning in March
Winchester Cultural Center is breaking into spring with new classes aimed at broadening the types of fine arts classes offered at the center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
Dance is a large part of the culture in Mexico, and Winchester brings the classic technique behind Mexican folkloric dance to the classroom during a 12-week program. Classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. for children ages 6 to 12 and 7 to 8 p.m. for those ages 13 and older. Cost is $60.
The Mexican Folkloric Dance Program is extensive and encompasses various dances from many different Mexican states. Students learn authentic folk dances as they prepare for a public performance held at the conclusion of the program.
Due to popular demand, dance at Winchester will take on the contemporary style for the first six-week session beginning March 1. The class, for ages 11 and older, will focus on a mix of traditional jazz and ballet from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Cost is $32.
The class, paced for beginners, will focus on fluidity of movement, grace and muscle control through ballet exercises, stretch and choreography to modern music.
Beginning March 1, students ages 14 and older can try their hands at ceramics from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The class, developed for beginners, covers the basics of ceramic hand-building techniques including slab construction, handling greenware and glazing for firing. Video instruction will provide additional instruction. Cost for the six-week class is $65.
Rhythms are the heartbeats of many cultures worldwide. They establish mood, morale and the level of celebration. The Ancestral Rhythms and Arts Program will teach the cultural rhythms of Africa through music, dance, drama, language, song, folklore and storytelling for ages 8 and older from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. beginning March 2 at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Cost for the 12-week program is $45 with admission to the drum circle at $5 per person.
