Lifeguards Needed at County Pools
Training Classes Available for Potential Summer Employees
Clark County Parks and Recreation’s Aquatics Program is now recruiting individuals 15 ½ years and older to work as lifeguards, water safety instructors, cashiers and pool management staff for the 2008 summer season. Clark County has 12 pools throughout the valley as well as facilities in Indian Springs, Laughlin, Logandale and Overton. Facilities are open to the public Memorial Day weekend and remain open through weekends in September.
Lifeguard training is offered at a reduced rate of $25, which is $100 off the regular fee, for those willing to sign a three-month employment contract with Clark County. Those enrolling in the 37- hour lifeguard classes must be able to retrieve a weighted object from 7-10 feet of water and swim with it for 20 yards and swim 300 yards continuously using a combination of breaststroke and front crawl. Pay rates for lifeguards begin at $9 per hour, with available work hours ranging up to 30 per week. Site Supervisors can make up to $15 depending on experience.
Water Safety Instructor classes are available to those who are at least 16 years of age. Prerequisite skills include the ability to swim all competitive and resting strokes prior to enrollment. This class certifies individuals to teach the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim and Parent/Child Aquatic Programs. Fee is $40 for Clark County employees, $140 for all others. Water Safety Instructor pay rates begin at $10/hour (Must have lifeguard certification as well.)
Applicants for cashier positions need no additional training, but cash handling and customer service experience are a plus. Cashier pay rates begin at $8.50/hour.
There are eleven lifeguard training classes available in the months of March, April, May and June with classes taking place at Sunrise Neighborhood Pool (Lake Mead and Nellis) and Sunset Neighborhood Pool (Sunset and Eastern.) There are three WSI course available in March, April and May.
Early enrollment is recommended because training classes fill up quickly as summer approaches. Information on class dates and locations is available at the Seasonal Aquatics Office at 455-8508, Desert Breeze Aquatic Office at 455-7798 option 2 or online.
Applications can be picked up at the Aquatics Office, 5800 E. Flamingo Road, 455-8508; and at the Desert Breeze Aquatic Office, 8275 Spring Mountain Road, 455-7798. Application packets can also be uploaded on the department’s website www.accessclarkcounty.com/parks.
