Senior Citizen’s Property Tax/Rent Assistance Program

M. W. Schofield, County Assessor, announces his office will begin accepting applications for the Senior Citizen’s Tax/Rent Assistance program.

To qualify, seniors must be 62 by June 30, 2008; a Nevada resident since July 1, 2007; own or rent property in Clark County, including a manufactured home or lot; and have a total household income of  $27,863 or less, including Social Security.

Seniors must provide a copy of their Social Security 1099 form, proof of any additional income and a copy of their 2007 IRS return (if they file).  Claimants cannot have “liquid assets” that exceed $150,000.  “Liquid assets” can be savings accounts, IRA’s, C-D’s, stocks & bonds, annuities, etc.  Renters must supply copies of their rent receipts for 2007.  Homeowners’ assessed value may not exceed $200,000 ($571,000 taxable value).  Applicants that own property, other than their home (residence), may not exceed $30,000 assessed value ($85,700 taxable value in Nevada).  The State Division of Aging Services requires that first time applicants provide proof of age (Nevada Driver’s License or I.D., birth certificate, or some other legal document showing date of birth). 

The Assessor’s Office visits many of the senior living complexes during the months of February, March and April to talk about the program and assist those applying with their applications.  The deadline to file for this program is April 30, 2008.  If you think you may qualify, or if you know of someone that may qualify for this program, we encourage you to call the Assessor’s Office customer service number, 455-3882, and request to have an application mailed to you, or apply at any of the Assessor’s Office locations:
