Hello friends in District B,

Let me start by thanking everyone who has shown me so much support recently. We have had a busy and exciting last couple months and it is always great to hear directly from you.

As you may have heard, a group of neighbors and officials including Sen. Harry Reid, Commission Chairman Rory Reid and State Sen. John Lee helped me dedicate the new Clark County Shooting Park on Aug. 25.

The shooting park, located at 11357 N. Decatur Blvd. in the northwest part of the Las Vegas Valley, will allow gun owners a safe and affordable place for recreational shooting. The 148-acre first phase of the park, which is expected to open in December, features 24 combination trap and skeet fields with a pro shop and cafeteria; an archery range and building with a 30-seat classroom and restrooms; a public rifle and pistol range with a pro shop and convenience store; and a hunter education center with a 90-seat classroom with archery, rifle, pistol and shotgun ranges and a simulated hunting course. The site also has a shotgun center with 80 spaces for recreational vehicles that will house safety officers on-site.

This is a great addition to the recreational facilities available to our residents, and we at the county will be sure to let you know of any updates.

Below are a few announcements, reminders and short articles that I hope you will find helpful. Remember to be careful and stay safe. Be extra careful on the roads as the kids are back in school and Halloween is just around the corner. And although we are nearing the end of the flash flood season, remember that flash floods can happen at any time during the year. If a warning is issued, stay where you are. If you are in a flood area, move to higher ground. Remember never drive through a flooded road or around barricades. It can be difficult to determine how deep floodwaters are and water can rise dramatically in minutes.

As always, if you have any issues or concerns that I may be able to help you with, contact me by e-mail or by calling my office at 455-3504.

Thank you again for all you support

Sincerely,

Tom Collins

Communications Towers To Be Replaced

Some of the old communications towers found in District B are being replaced this year. The towers, including one on Glendale Peak, have been around for nearly 100 years. They were originally used as beacons to mark the route to Las Vegas for airplanes and over the decades held an increasing number of antennas and other communications equipment. This equipment is critical for our police, firefighters and other public safety professionals.

Saturday, Oct. 24th, is Annual Make a Difference Day

This year's event will be held at Petitti Park, 2505 N. Bruce St., in North Las Vegas.  It will be a "Green Expo" event, focusing on environmental sustainability, energy conservation and activities for the whole family. Lots of giveaways while supplies last. Call (702) 633-1532 for more information.

Mesquite Events

Softball tournaments, a barbecue competition, downtown festival and long-drive championship highlight a long list of special events scheduled for Mesquite during the next few months. For information about specific events, visit the City of Mesquite’s events calendar at http://www.mesquitenv.com/calendar.

New Housing Agency Coming

For years, low-income residents seeking help with housing had to find their way through a complex system that governed public housing.
But now local public housing has been simplified. The 2009 Legislature cleared the way to consolidate the local housing authorities of Clark County and the cities of Henderson, North Las Vegas and Las Vegas into the new Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority. Now, the local jurisdictions are working together to make this a reality.

 Committee on Community Priorities

Clark County’s newly-formed citizens Committee on Community Priorities will engage residents in a community-wide discussion about budget priorities.

The County Commission has directed the committee to provide feedback on prioritizing county services provided to the public. The committee also may make recommendations related to the consolidation of services, legislative changes and revenue enhancements.

The committee will hold forums to collect community input and make recommendations to the full County Commission in January as the county begins formulating its budget priorities for the next fiscal year.
The committee will meet at the Clark County Government Center in the Commission Chambers at 500 S. Grand Central Pkwy. in downtown Las Vegas. The tentative meeting schedule is:

  • Oct. 8 at 12 p.m.
  • Oct.  22 at 9 a.m.
  • Nov. 5 at 11 a.m.
  • Nov. 19 at 9 a.m.
  • Dec. 3 at 9 a.m.
  • Dec. 11 at 9 a.m.

Each Committee on Community Priorities meeting will be aired live and taped for replay on Clark County Television (CCTV) cable Channel 4. All Channel 4 programming is streamed live at www.accessclarkcounty.com.

Get Informed at Metro's First Tuesday Program

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's 1st Tuesday program is an excellent opportunity for citizens to get involved with their police department.

On the first Tuesday of every month, police open the doors to local substations from 7 to 8 p.m. for the community to have an open forum to communicate with the police officers who patrol their neighborhoods.

Each month a different area of the police department is highlighted so the community can get a better idea of what goes on "behind the scenes" throughout the different sections of the department.

First Tuesday meetings are held at the Northeast Area Command Station at 831 N. Mojave Road, 7 p.m., first Tuesday of each month. Contact Bella Scholes at (702) 828-3340 or by e-mail at B7845Y@LVMPD.com with any questions.

Stagnant, Unused Pool in Your Neighborhood?

Unused and dirty pools are not only a danger because a person could fall in, those pools can also be a breeding area for mosquitoes and other pests.

The Southern Nevada Health District will respond to all citizen-generated complaints of stagnant swimming pools. Code Enforcement agencies are available to assist, however they do not have chemicals to prevent mosquito breeding. Each code group has different pool response protocols; therefore, we will tailor our referral methods to match their response.

Contact numbers for various agencies: Clark County Code Enforcement (702) 455-4191; Las Vegas (702) 229-4915, or (702) 229-5103; North Las Vegas (702) 633-1581.

Building a deck? Planting a tree? Installing a mailbox? Call 811.  811 is the new number you should call before you begin any digging project.  Information about this new federally mandated program is available at Call811.com or http://www.call811.com/default.aspx

Every digging job requires a call – even small projects like planting trees or shrubs. If you hit an underground utility line while digging, you can harm yourself or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood and potentially be responsible for fines and repair costs.
A new, federally-mandated national "Call Before You Dig" number, 811, was created to help protect you from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines while working on digging projects. People digging often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked due to concerns about project delays, costs and previous calls about other projects. These assumptions can be life-threatening if you're lucky...deadly if you're not.

Smart digging means calling 811 before each job. Whether you are a homeowner or a professional excavator, one call to 811 gets your underground utility lines marked for FREE. Don't assume you know what's below. Protect yourself and those around you – Call 811 every time.

One female and one male cat and their offspring can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years. One female and one male dog and their offspring can produce 4,372 puppies in seven years. There aren’t enough homes for them all but there is something you can do about it – have your pet spayed or neutered.

Clark County has entered into a partnership with Heaven Can Wait to provide low cost dog and cat sterilizations. These services have been made possible through the DMV Spay and Neuter License Plate Fund.
Please visit Heaven Can Wait’s Web site at
www.hcws.org to find more information on this important public service.

The Mesquite Resort Association provided $20,000 in prize money for this event.

In addition to teachers, and school staff members, parent organization members are encouraged to participate in the games. For registration and other information go to the event Web site at www.mesquiteteachergames.com
