Since opening in the summer of 1998, the Desert Breeze Community Center has grown to become one of the best and most popular centers in the area. Now, more than 10,000 residents enjoy the community center each month.
In October, the county completed the final two phases of the community center master plan when a 22,000-square-foot addition opened. The expansion included an additional gymnasium, weight room, exercise room, conference room, game room and a family changing room for the aquatic facility.
The center's indoor heated swimming pool and an outdoor water park provide year-round recreational and competitive swimming opportunities, which are very popular. Water exercise classes, swim teams, lap swim periods, masters swimming and lifeguard training are just some of the programs available year-round. Residents of all ages enjoy the slides and fountains at the water park from late May to early September.
In addition to the center, the adjacent park hosts several special events every year that attract thousands of residents. Like the community center, the park also has many amenities that make it a popular destination year-round. The park has soccer and softball fields, picnic areas, dog runs, basketball courts, a skate park and more.
For more information on the center or the park call 455-8200 or click here to visit the parks Web page.
With the first phase open, expansion at this popular park continues.
Phase one of the new Spring Valley Park opened in October, 2007 and includes a playground, picnic areas with barbecues, a walking path and other amenities on 18 acres. Now, efforts are underway on the next phase. When complete, phase two will include an additional 18 acres of park space that will include an extended walking path, large pavilion, dog run and new restrooms.
Spring Valley Park is at the northeast corner of Buffalo and Flamingo next to Spring Valley High School.
Neighborhood Cleanup
Thanks to the Casa Linda Action for Neighborhood group and the active citizens on Redwood Street in Spring Valley who came together for a recent neighborhood cleanup.
Two months ago these concerned citizens used a Clark County Small Project Grant to rent two dumpsters, and cleaned up yards, garages, streets and sidewalks around Spring Mountain Road and Rainbow Boulevard.
Wendy Reinan spearheaded efforts for the Casa Linda group and was pleased to see neighbors volunteering to help each other.
Neighbors helping each other assisted in cleaning up the area but, more importantly, added to an overall sense of community.
"One family paid out of their own pocket to help an elderly neighbor who was physically unable to do the work and could not afford a landscaper," Wendy said.
Redwood area resident Diane Garvey said, "This clean up is just the beginning, our real hope is to develop an active neighborhood organization and advocacy group."
District F residents interested in applying for a Small Project Grant should contact the Southwest Liaison for Clark County, Mike Shannon, at 455-8338.
