Justice Court, North Las Vegas Township, has two Justices of the Peace elected for six-year terms, a Court Administrator/Clerk, and a staff of 16 full-time and 3 part-time employees . Justice Court hears probable cause, arraignments, preliminary hearings, misdemeanor and traffic trials, bond forfeitures, evictions, small claims matters where the amount in controversy does not exceed $5,000, and civil matters where the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000. Other duties performed by the Justices of the Peace include setting bail, issuing search warrants, summonses, protective orders and arrest warrants.

COURTROOM STANDARDS:

No weapons are allowed in the courthouse, and there is no smoking in the courthouse. There is no eating, drinking, or chewing gum in the courtroom.

No cellular telephones are allowed in the courthouse. Please leave your telephone in your vehicle. The bailiffs may also hold them for you in a secure area, and return them to you upon your departure.

Proper courtroom attire is required. Knee length shorts are permitted. No tank tops or halter tops are allowed in the courtroom, shoes are required. T-shirts which show offensive slogans or pictures are not allowed. Hats should be removed before entering the courtroom.

While in the courtroom, sit quietly when Court is in session. Do not talk or whisper. The Court proceedings may be transcribed by a court reporter and noise can interfere with the preparation of this important record.

Avoid bringing children to court. If it is necessary to do so, please monitor their behavior so they remain quiet at all times . If they are quiet, children are allowed in the courtroom, but parents may be asked to leave the courtroom if their child becomes noisy or unruly.

All beepers and electronic devices must be turned off before entering the courtroom. Avoid reading newspapers, or books in the courtrooms, particularly if your use of such material may be a distraction to others.

BAILIFFS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SECURITY AND ENFORCEMENT OF COURTROOM STANDARDS.

If you are NON-ENGLISH speaking and are appearing for either a criminal or traffic case, a translator will be provided for you. If you are appearing for a Civil or Small Claims case, or a Landlord-Tenant dispute,  you SHOULD bring a translator with you when you appear at the Clerk's Office, or for your Court appearance. Otherwise, you may not be able to present your information to the Judge. For court appearances, translators may be obtained from the District Court Interpreter's Office.
