GENERAL ELECTIONS OPEN (Federal / State) Even-Numbered Years |
What Is a General Election:
Candidates who receive the most votes in a General Election are elected to office.
Nevada Is an OPEN General Election State:
You may vote for all offices and questions on the ballot for your precinct, regardless of your party affiliation. |
PRIMARY ELECTIONS CLOSED (Federal / State) Even-Numbered Years |
What Is a Primary Election:
A Primary Election is a preliminary (nominating) election to select, when necessary, Democratic, Republican and nonpartisan candidates who will run in the General Election contests (except candidates for U.S. President/Vice President and special district offices, who will only appear in the General Election). The direct vote of the people selects the candidates, rather than votes of convention delegates.
Nevada Is a CLOSED Primary Election State:
In Nevada’s Federal/State Primary Elections, you cannot vote for candidates from another party. In deciding which candidates for partisan offices may advance to the Federal/State General Election, only registered Democrats may vote for Democrats and only registered Republicans may vote for Republicans. All registered voters, regardless of party, may vote for nonpartisan offices. |

Major Political Parties: |

Democratic: If you are a registered Democrat, you may vote in your precinct's contests which select Democratic candidates AND in all of your precinct's nonpartisan contests. |

Republican: If you are a registered Republican, you may vote in your precinct's contests which select Republican candidates AND in all of your precinct's nonpartisan contests. |

OTHER Political parties and AFFILIATIONS:
If you are not registered as a Democrat or Republican, you may vote for ONLY Nonpartisan CONTESTS for your precinct in Federal/State Primary Elections. Minor party, other party and independent candidates only appear in the General Election, NOT the Primary Election. |

Minor Political Parties: If your Voter Registration Application indicates that your party is one of those listed below, your affiliation will be classified as "minor party" and it will be listed under the name of that party. You may vote for ONLY Nonpartisan CONTESTS for your precinct. Currently, Nevada officially recognizes the following minor parties: |

Green Party |

Independent American Party |

Libertarian Party |

Superhappy Party |

All Other Political Parties: If your Voter Registration Application indicates that your party is one not officially recognized as a major or minor party by the State of Nevada, your affiliation will be classified as "other" and it will be listed under the name of that party. You may vote for ONLY Nonpartisan contests for your precinct. |

Nonpartisans or "Independents:" If your Voter Registration Application indicates that you are "nonpartisan" (not affiliated with a political party), or that you are an "independent," your affiliation will be classified as "nonpartisan" and it will be listed as "nonpartisan." You may vote for ONLY Nonpartisan contests for your precinct. |
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS OPEN, NONPARTISAN (City) Odd-Numbered Years |
All Municipal Elections (Primary and General) Are OPEN and NONPARTISAN:
In Clark County, Nevada, candidates’ parties will not appear on the ballot in Municipal Elections because the offices are nonpartisan.

CHANGE YOUR PARTY |
When you change your political party affiliation, properly complete, in its entirety, a Voter Registration Application and indicate your new party affiliation. Make sure you submit it prior to the registration deadline, especially the deadline for the federal/state primary election.
If your political party affiliation preference is not current, in a federal/state primary election you may only vote the ballot corresponding to the last party affiliation you submitted to the Election Department.
