What Is on the Ballot: Federal, State and County offices will be up for election. Ballot questions will be included. Federal/state Primary Elections are CLOSED. Federal/state General Elections are OPEN. |
What Is a “Closed” Primary Election: A Primary Election is a preliminary (or nominating) election. Its purpose is to select, when necessary, the Democratic, Republican and Nonpartisan candidates who will run for office in the General Election. The direct vote of the people selects these candidates, rather than delegates at a convention. Nevada has “closed” Primary Elections, meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans may vote in partisan contests, but all registered voters may vote in nonpartisan contests. This is a key reason why you must choose a political party when you register to vote. |
What Is an “Open” General Election: Candidates receiving the most votes in General Elections are elected to office. Nevada has “open” general elections, meaning you may vote for any candidate listed in your General Election sample ballot, regardless of your party affiliation. State and/or county questions may also be on the ballot. |
