Mount Charleston
The secret to keeping cool during the hot summer months is a trip to Mount Charleston, located 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Temperatures average a refreshing 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the city.
Located in the Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada. Mount Charleston stands at 11,918 feet and offers a tranquil contrast to the excitement and high energy of Las Vegas. There are numerous outdoor activities here such as horseback riding, hiking, camping and picnicking. Mount Charleston is also home to the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort.
Red Rock
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers a 13-mile scenic drive, hiking, biking, rock climbing, horse-back riding, and seasonal camping. A visitor center at the base of the scenic drive offers in-depth information about the area's history, recreation, geology, wildlife and vegetation. There is a small entrance fee to enter the 13-mile scenic drive. The conservation area, spanning some 197,000 acres, features colorful sandstone formations, canyons, a spring, and is home to a variety of wildlife, including bobcats, desert bighorn sheep and wild burros.
Lake Mead/Hoover Dam
Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a 30-mile ride east of Las Vegas for those interested in water sports. The lake is the world's largest man-made reservoir and provides a wide variety of year-round recreational activities, including: boating, swimming, hiking, scuba diving and sport fishing. The 1.5-million acre recreation area that surrounds the lake is equally unique. Three of the nation's four desert ecosystems meet here - the Great Basin, Mojave and Sonoran deserts.
Zion National Monument (165 miles)
Zion is an ancient Hebrew word meaning a place of refuge or sanctuary. Within the park’s 229 square miles is a dramatic landscape of sculptured canyons and soaring cliffs. Zion is located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and Mojave Desert provinces.
Grand Canyon National Park (276 miles to South Rim)
The Grand Canyon is a great chasm carved over millennia through the rocks of the Colorado Plateau. It is more than an awe-inspiring view; it is a pleasuring ground for those that explore the roads, hike the trails, or float the currents of the turbulent Colorado River.
San Diego (333 miles)
San Diego is home to the Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld, LegoLand, San Diego Zoo, and 70 miles of beautiful beaches. You can arrive there is a short one hour flight or drive in about six hours.
Los Angeles/Disneyland (266 miles)
The close proximity to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and everything else Los Angeles has to offer is highly desirable to kids and adults alike. It can be reached in only four and a half hours by car or a one hour flight.
Phoenix (298 miles)
You can visit the golfing mecca of Phoenix, AZ and its over 200 year-round picturesque golf courses in a short five hour drive or one hour flight. |
