Free Air Quality Kits for K-12 Teachers
The Clark County Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management in cooperation with DRI, as a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education, is pleased to offer Air Quality Science Kit boxes to all Nevada teachers who represent rural and urban districts, and private or public institutions.
The science boxes consist of portable suitcases containing scientific specimens and/or multicultural artifacts for all school ages, designed to supplement the study of air quality throughout the State of Nevada. Each box also includes background information, a description of the artifacts or specimens in the box, and sample lesson plans. Some boxes may also include additional books or audiovisual resources and/or hands-on pieces. Some lessons may require a limited number of "consumable" items, which you will need to provide for your students.
To obtain more information or request a kit, please visit the DRI website at http://www.dri.edu/Education/ScienceBox/matrix.html

Las Vegas Teacher Receives EPA Award
On April 21st, 2005, Silverado High School teacher, Mr. Don Curry received the 2005 EPA Region 9 Environmental Award recognizing his environmental contributions to Las Vegas. Mr. Curry and his Global Lab students were selected from a pool of more than 175 nominees. The award was presented by EPA's regional administrator, Wayne Nastri, who commended Mr. Curry's efforts and environmental work. "Thanks to their efforts, our air, water and land will be cleaner and safer for generations to come," stated Nastri.
Mr. Curry's unique class is considered a "one of its kind" in the Western United States. This class, also known as, the "Global Lab Program" was designed to educate, explore and address environmental issues both locally and nationally. Since its establishment in 1995, the students have addressed issues such as water quality and quantity, air pollution and weed abatement.
Over the past year and a half, the students have worked closely with the Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management and the Conservation District of Southern Nevada to develop a "student-to-student" (S2S) program, which spreads the word to Clark County School District (CCSD) students about dust and ozone. The students have dedicated their time and talent to teach younger students about air quality and the impact it has on their health. This interactive and educational presentation has received rave reviews from the CCSD students, staff and administration. The program has reached over 800 students to date, and the numbers are anticipated to triple next school year.
