The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner will accept applications for the 2009 Coroner Reserve Investigator Academy from  08/01/09 - 11/01/09. The 2009 Reserve Academy is tentatively set to begin in the fall of 2009.  The details of the Reserve Academy Class are defined in this site. Due to the overwhelming interest in this program, please do not phone the office inquiring about the process or request application prior to the on-line opening date.

All applications are to be mailed to this office by 11/01/09 at 4 PM or must be postmarked by 11/01/09  for consideration.

You will receive a letter by 12/01/09 notifying you of the next step in this process.  Again, please be patient. Due to the volume of interest, please do not call or respond to this office inquiring about your application or the dates of the start and finish of the programIf you need an answer to a question please E-mail here.  No questions will be taken over the telephone or at the front desk.

RESERVE INVESTIGATOR

Reserves are volunteers who aid/assist the full time investigative staff in conducting medicolegal death investigations. Upon successful completion of the Reserve Investigator Academy, students are eligible to apply for a limited number of Reserve Investigator positions. These Reserve Investigators ride along on a bi-monthly basis responding to death scene investigations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Investigators work with exposure to dead bodies in various stages of decomposition, infectious and contagious diseases, noxious fumes and hazardous chemicals or materials. Work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts. Work in all weather conditions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS

  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Must submit to a criminal background check. Applicants must have no felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will not necessarily disqualify the applicant.
  • Must provide two references (non-relative) attesting to applicant’s integrity/suitability for this position.
  • Must successfully complete initial interview.
  • Must demonstrate a sincere interest in medicolegal death investigations versus mere curiosity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS

  • Proven ability in dealing with the public in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in performing investigations and crime scene processing.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with diverse cultures.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with various disciplines within the criminal justice field.
  • Professional/educational experience in related fields.

RESERVE INVESTIGATOR TRAINING COMPONENTS

Classroom component:

  • Trainees must pass a series of written examinations with a minimum score of 80%.
  • Trainees are evaluated during their classroom training and must attain a minimum score of 80%.
  • A limited number of trainees will progress to the field training. These assignments are based on exam/evaluation scores and class standing.
  • Trainees not progressing to the field training will be awarded certificates for their 80 hours of classroom time at graduation.

Field component:

  • Trainees are assigned to full-time investigators for 80 hours of field training.
  • Two ride-along sessions per month are required for a total of 5 months.
  • Trainees are required to write/submit reports for every shift that they field train.
  • Trainees will be evaluated monthly by Field Training Investigator (FTI).
  • Trainees who successfully complete the entire academy are eligible to apply for a limited number of open reserve positions.
