Drought Alert

Effective Jan. 1, 2004, Southern Nevada moved to Drought Alert status. Drought Alert is the second stage of a three-phase alert system that calls for more progressive water-use restrictions based on drought conditions. Key measures that went into effect include:

  • All Drought Watch regulations apply in addition to Drought Alert regulations.
  • Watering during spring and fall is restricted to three assigned days per week. Sundays are not optional water days in the spring, fall or winter.
  • No new turf in residential front yards.
  • Turf in rear and side yards is limited to 50% of landscapable area with a 10-foot minimum dimension and a 5,000-square-foot maximum.
  • More stringent water budgets for golf courses go into effect.
  • The Las Vegas Valley Water District and other area providers will step up enforcement of water-waste rules. If water waste is observed on a property, customers are issued a warning and given time to make repairs. If the problem is not corrected, a water waste fee is issued. Fees are based on the size of the meter that serves the property. First-time residential fees typically start at $25. Fees double with additional violations.
